“Remember Lot’s wife”: a reflection on letting go of the past and fixing our eyes on Jesus to move forward in faith toward what God has ahead.
Remembering Lot’s Wife: Why We Must Not Look Back
In the Gospel of Luke 17:32, Jesus gives us a brief reminder with a deep spiritual impact:
“Remember Lot’s wife.”
This story, told in the book of Genesis, shows us a family that God led out of destruction. Yet as they left Sodom, Lot’s wife looked back and became a pillar of salt. Looking back was not just a physical gesture; it revealed a divided heart, gripped by longing for what she was meant to leave behind and lacking faith in the way of salvation God was offering her.
Perseverance and a Vision for the Future
In the wider world we see how great visions require perseverance and an eye on tomorrow. Long-standing brands like Coca-Cola or Pepsi have lasted for generations because they never let economic crises or times of uncertainty stop them. They do not focus on past losses or hard seasons; they keep innovating and looking toward the future. If human determination and an earthly vision can overcome adversity, how much more does faith in Christ enable us to move forward without losing heart!
Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus
The Lord did not call us to a Christian life paralyzed by the past. The apostle Paul understood this spiritual truth well when he wrote in his letter to the Philippians:
“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)
When we look back, whether at our mistakes, our wounds or old comforts, we risk holding back the spiritual growth God wants to give us today. In Christ, grace frees us from the guilt of the past, and the promise of the Gospel assures us of a future full of hope.
Moving Forward Together
Today we encourage you to let go of the burdens that tie you to yesterday. God has a path of blessing, transformation and purpose designed for you. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. Do not turn back.
