Finding Comfort: Reading the Bible Through Pain

Scripture does not avoid suffering: in Jesus we meet the God who understands our pain and holds us up with His presence and His grace.

Pain as a Lens for Understanding Grace

All of us, at some point in our lives, face dark valleys: the loss of a loved one, uncertain health, emotional brokenness or situations that seem beyond our strength. In those seasons, it is natural to ask where God is. Yet when we read the Bible through the lens of pain, we discover that Scripture does not avoid human suffering, but meets it head-on.

Jesus: The God Who Understands Our Suffering

Our faith is deeply centered on Christ. This means we understand the heart of God through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In Jesus we do not see a distant or indifferent God, but the Savior who knows our afflictions up close. In the Gospels we find Jesus weeping at the tomb of his friend Lazarus and feeling deep anguish in the garden of Gethsemane.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.” — Matthew 5:4

Christ does not offer us cold explanations of the why behind every trial; He offers us His living and compassionate presence. In His undeserved grace, He takes our heavy burdens and holds us up when our own strength runs out.

The Communion Table: A Reminder of Hope

As a community in the Hispanic Ministry of Palm Lake Christian Church, we gather every Sunday around the Lord’s Table. In weekly communion, we remember that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross is the greatest display of love in the midst of suffering. His spiritual presence in the bread and the cup renews our certainty that pain and death do not have the last word.

Steps to Find Comfort in the Word

  • Be honest before God: The Psalms of lament teach us that it is right to express our pain, sorrow and doubts sincerely before the Lord.

  • Rest in grace: Remember that what holds you up does not depend on your own strength, but on God’s unmovable grace.

  • Walk in community: You do not have to carry the burden alone. In our church we share one another’s burdens in love and prayer.
