Is It Really Necessary to Gather?
Today we hear more and more often things like “I believe in God in my own way” or “I don’t need to go to church to have faith.” While a personal relationship with God is the foundation of our spiritual life, the idea that we can live our faith completely on our own does not agree with the teaching of the Holy Scriptures.
In the Hispanic Ministry of Palm Lake Christian Church in St. Petersburg, we want to reflect deeply on the immeasurable value of gathering together and on how community strengthens our daily walk.
The Biblical Context: Faith Was Never Designed to Be Lived Alone
When we look at the New Testament, we find that the original word for church is Ekklesia, meaning an assembly of people called to come together for a common purpose. In the Bible, faith in Jesus Christ is always lived and expressed within a spiritual family.
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
— Hebrews 10:24-25
The author of Hebrews is not giving us a rigid order but wise pastoral advice: drawing away from the community slows our growth in love and maturity. We gather not to keep a religious habit, but to be stirred up to love and serve.
Breaking Down the Philosophy of Isolation
There are several reasons why spiritual isolation weakens our Christian life:
The design of the Body of Christ: In 1 Corinthians 12, the apostle Paul compares believers to the parts of a body. An eye or a hand cannot survive or do its work apart from the rest of the body. We need one another.
Practicing forgiveness and grace: It is easy to be patient and loving when we are alone. It is in community that we put into practice the commands to forgive one another, bear with one another and love one another in the grace of God.
The Lord’s Table and shared worship: Our weekly gathering lets us share the Lord’s Supper together, remembering the living presence of Christ and our salvation by grace through faith.
An Invitation to Walk Together
If you have been away, or if you wonder whether gathering really matters, we extend a warm welcome to you. We are not a perfect community, but a group of people redeemed by the grace of God who want to learn and grow together.
We look forward to seeing you this Sunday and every Sunday: worship at 11:00 AM (English) or 2:00 PM (Spanish), with the Hispanic Ministry of Palm Lake Christian Church, St. Petersburg, FL. Come to worship, hear the Word and share as a family.
